Apple unveiled its iPhone 16e on Wednesday, a more budget-friendly addition to the tech giant's iPhone 16 lineup that incorporates Apple Intelligence tools. The iPhone 16e succeeds the iPhone SE, last released in 2022, which served as Apple 's entry-level iPhone option. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e sits between the standard iPhone 16's $800 price tag and the SE's $430 retail price.
Powering the new phone is Apple's custom cellular modem chip, the C1, which handles the device's AI functionalities. These tools encompass text and audio summarization, the creation of new emojis, and enhanced capabilities for Apple's virtual assistant, Siri. Apple also emphasized the iPhone 16e's improved battery life and camera performance compared to its predecessor, the SE. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e commence on Friday, with in-store availability slated for February 28th.'We're thrilled for iPhone 16e to complete the lineup as a powerful and more affordable option, bringing the iPhone experience to even more users,' stated Apple Vice President Kaiann Drance in a press release. Apple has been gradually introducing its AI advancements since last June, with the full suite of high-tech capabilities yet to be globally released. Notably, the technology is unavailable in certain regions, including China, where Apple has been experiencing market share decline. The rollout timeline for AI features in China remains unclear. Apart from its AI capabilities, the iPhone 16e boasts a 16.1-inch display screen and ditches the home screen button found on the SE. The new iPhone 16e will feature facial recognition for device unlocking.
