The show's present-day storyline sees Tom and Anna's characters living a seemingly perfect life with two kids, a beautiful house, and thriving careers, but this facade is shattered when Max is released from prison and targets them for revenge. According to creator Nick Antosca, this change in the story allows for an atmosphere of guilt to be present throughout the family, adding to the paranoia and questions about culpability that run through the show.
In the show, Anna was Max's defense attorney when he was on trial for fatally stabbing his pregnant wife, and she convinced him to take a plea deal offered by Tom, which resulted in Max being sentenced to life in prison. After the trial, Tom and Anna began a romantic relationship and married, making Anna just as responsible for what happened to Max as her husband.
