Widow's Bay has been the surprise TV hit of the spring. The New England-set horror comedy has alternately tickled and terrified Apple TV viewers over the course of its first nine episodes.
Now, with the season finale looming over next week like an ominous fog bank, one question has been on every fan's mind: will Widow's Bay return? Widow's Bay, as it turns out, is definitely not cursed, because it has officially been renewed for a second season.
Apple TV announced the renewal with a video depicting Widow's Bay mayor Tom Loftis handing a note to town employee Dale , cancelling the town's fireworks display: it's a scene from episode 5,"What to Expect on Your Trip," but when we see the content of the note, it reveals that the show will, indeed, return for a sophomore season. It's no surprise, given the critical acclaim the show has received; it currently holds a 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In her review, Collider's Emily Bernard called it"the most daring, weirdest show on Apple TV," which is no small feat, considering the network also houses mind-boggling hits like Silo, Severance, and Pluribus. The series' popularity has even renewed interest in Rhys' previous series, the Cold War spy thriller The Americans.
