In a significant move, Apple has made its streaming service, Apple TV+, available for download on Android devices through the Google Play store. This expansion aims to capitalize on the growing popularity of Apple TV+ originals and attract a wider audience. Analysts believe this strategy reflects Apple's evolving approach to services revenue generation.

Apple has finally made its streaming service, Apple TV+, available on Android devices. The Apple TV+ app is now listed on the Google Play store, allowing Android users to download and access Apple's original content. This marks a significant shift for Apple, traditionally known for keeping its services within its own ecosystem, as it opens up its platform to a wider audience. This move comes at a strategic time, as Apple TV+ originals like 'Silo' and 'Severance' are gaining immense popularity.

Bloomberg reported that Apple invested a hefty $20 million per episode for the second season of 'Severance,' which premiered in January.Analysts believe this expansion is driven by Apple's desire to capitalize on the success of its popular shows and increase revenue from its services business. Jacob Bourne, a tech analyst at BI sister company EMARKETER, stated, 'The success of shows like 'Severance' and 'Silo' has created an opportunity to capture additional subscription revenue by reaching Android users.' This strategy aligns with Apple's 'evolving strategy' to bolster its services segment, particularly as it faces challenges in the hardware market, including competition from Chinese tech companies impacting iPhone sales. Apple's services, encompassing subscriptions, iCloud, advertising, and Apple Care, witnessed strong growth, reaching a record $26.3 billion in Q1 FY2025, a 14% year-over-year increase. While this expansion is expected to contribute to Apple's services revenue growth, Morningstar analyst William Kerwin cautioned that it doesn't signal a complete opening of Apple's ecosystem. Several features remain exclusive to iOS devices. Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee views this as a move to enhance Apple's competitive edge in the fiercely contested streaming industry, where its subscriber base is significantly smaller compared to Netflix. Netflix boasted over 300 million paid memberships globally in Q4 2024, while Apple does not disclose specific subscriber numbers. Apple TV+ is priced at $9.99 per month in the US, while Netflix's standard plan with ads costs $7.99. Last month, Apple offered a free weekend trial of Apple TV+ in an effort to attract new subscribers. Prior to its launch on Android phones, the Apple TV app was accessible on iOS devices, Windows computers, and various smart TVs
