Apple accuses Epic of starting a “fire, and pouring gasoline on it.”
, Apple said that “Epic started a fire, and poured gasoline on it, and now asks this court for emergency assistance in putting it out,” adding that Epic can itself resolve the issue “by simply adhering to the contractual terms that have profitably governed its relationship with Apple for years.”
Apple also states that Epic “could have avoided any further harm” involving both Fortnite and Unreal Engine—the software tool used to create Fortnite and many other popular videogames— with “a simple keystroke.” Apple further criticized Epic’s actions for “holding its own customers hostage to gain leverage in a business dispute.”
Citing Epic’s #freefortnite social media campaign, Apple accused Epic of engaging in a “full-scale, pre-planned media blitz surrounding its decision to breach its agreement with Apple, creating ad campaigns around the effort that continue to this day.”Last month, Epic had sued Apple after the iPhone maker’s decision to remove Fortnite from the App Store after it introduced its own payment system within the game that circumvented Apple’s.
