Apple's iOS 18.2 update introduces improved Natural Language Search capabilities to the App Store, Apple Music, and Apple TV apps. While this feature shows promise, its performance varies across apps and search queries.

Apple 's iOS 18.1 update marked the beginning of the gradual rollout of Apple Intelligence, introducing features like Writing Tools, AI-powered Siri upgrades, notification summaries, and more. With iOS 18.2, Apple continues to enhance its AI platform with new experiences powered by Genmoji, ChatGPT integration with Siri, and Image Playground. While these advancements are impressive, Apple Intelligence's potential remains largely unexplored.

One lesser-known feature is the ability to utilize Natural Language Search in select apps using your iPhone. This functionality, initially introduced with the App Store in iOS 18.1, has now expanded to the Apple Music and Apple TV apps in iOS 18.2. This long-awaited update is welcome news, as Apple's previous search engine was notoriously poor. Misspellings often resulted in the inability to locate desired songs on Apple Music. However, the new Natural Language Search still elicits mixed feelings. BGR colleagues have lauded the App Store's Natural Language Search, praising its ability to find apps based on general descriptions instead of requiring precise names. For instance, users can now search for 'first-person shooters' or 'fitness apps with fun workouts.' However, my personal experience indicates that App Store search results prioritize apps containing the exact search terms in their names over those with relevant descriptions. The iPhone's Natural Language Search in Apple Music and Apple TV offers a more inconsistent experience. Searching for 'workout songs' yields an Apple Fitness+ playlist, but colleagues report better results with more specific queries like '90s hip-hop like Tupac' or 'happy songs to drive to.' The Apple TV app's implementation is arguably the most problematic. Searching for 'exciting thrillers with a sequel' returns movies without sequels, including some that lack the 'exciting thriller' descriptor. However, simpler queries like 'space exploration movies' produce more satisfactory results.
