A new HomePod with a screen is reportedly coming soon, potentially outshining the expected iPhone releases in terms of impact.
One of the world's top Apple experts believes the company's most significant new product this year won't be a new iPhone, but a first-of-its-kind HomePod with a screen. This device, according to industry insiders and leakers, is expected to launch sometime this year and could mark a 'significant step toward a bigger role in the smart home ' for Apple . The HomePod family has seen a series of ups and downs in terms of functionality, affordability, and commercial success.
The original 2018 HomePod received a lukewarm reception, while the 2020 Mini model, priced more competitively, fared better. The 2023 'full-sized' HomePod 2 seems to be somewhere in the middle as far as sales figures go. While the upcoming touchscreen HomePod's success remains uncertain, Gurman suggests its popularity might not be the most crucial factor for Apple. The company is reportedly planning to release a more advanced model in a few years, featuring groundbreaking characteristics like a robotic limb to assist a larger, sophisticated display. This limb would follow users around their room to better understand their needs and provide assistance with tasks like video calls. However, pricing details for this future model are scarce. Apple's first smart display is unlikely to rival the Echo Show 5's affordability, with estimates placing it closer to the $150 Echo Show 8. The HomePod Show, as it's currently being called, is expected to function like a smaller, cheaper iPad, handling FaceTime calls independently from your iPhone, controlling smart devices, playing music, and potentially streaming video content from apps like YouTube and Netflix. Essentially, it will be an Amazon Echo Show with Siri instead of Alexa, integrated with various Apple apps and services
