The holiday images on Apple’s London HQ are always spectacular, projected 330 feet tall on Battersea Power Station. Here’s what they’ll look like.

Follow AuthorApple's annual holiday projections at London's Battersea Power Station will feature public designs for the first time this year. Winners, including a 7-year-old and other creatives, will have their festive artwork displayed on the iconic chimneys until December 24th, alongside contributions from celebrities like Kylie Minogue.

This event, visible from afar, celebrates the holiday spirit.Apple’s annual holiday projections go live at 5 p.m. U.K. time on Thursday, Dec. 4. These projections light up the 330-feet chimneys and washtowers of the Battersea Power Station in south London, Apple’s U.K. HQ. This year, for the first time, members of the public could submit their designs: Apple has just revealed the winners, and they look great. The annual event began two years ago with Christmas trees designed by Sir David Hockney, followed by a bespoke Wallace and Gromit campaign last December. This year, Apple invited Brits to come up with their own designs on an iPad and chose 24 winners which will be projected in sequence every evening from 5 p.m. to 10.30p.m. until Dec. 24. There are also designs from a handful of public figures, Kylie Minogue, Sir Stephen Fry, Maro Itoje, Oliver Jeffers, David Shrigley OBE, and Munya Chawawa. However good they look in images, you can be sure they will look remarkable full-size. Thanks to the template that Apple provided to entrants, every still or moving image fits the huge canvas perfectly. Battersea Power Station is a London landmark and the annual projections are clearly visible from a great distance, as the building sits on the south bank of the Thames. Among the finalists were Miah D.B, a seven-year-old girl who said she loves drawing on her iPad “and was inspired by emotions.” Her image has plenty of those, with faces that evoke feelings from “I will have some more turkey, please,” through to “that’s really not the gift I asked for, you know.” That’s the image on the right at the top of this post.Varsha Simha from Canterbury was inspired by Christmas sweaters and other items found in a Christmas market. Her design is at the left of the top image. “I started by drawing fuzzy little minions cuddled up, and went on to add details like warm highlights, Christmas hats and glowing stars. I haven’t celebrated Christmas as part of my culture before, but the idea of gifts, lights, and snow excited me. This competition was a way for me to be part of the festive atmosphere,” she said. My favorite is from Mister Hope, from Buxton, who said he was inspired by his love of fantastical creatures. I like the idea of someone so mad about Christmas they dress like a tree as well as decorating one. Others include a splendidly animated tower of Brussels sprouts elegant Christmas spotted felines and a Christmas tree made entirely of presents.
