Apple just released iOS 26.0.1. But if you haven’t updated to the new iOS 26 software cycle, or can’t, there’s an alternative available.
Apple released a new update to its iPhone software on Monday, Sept. 30: iOS 26.0.1. But what if your phone can’t run iOS 26.0.1 or, since the next-gen software is just two weeks old, you’re reluctant to jump to iOS 26 right away? There’s an alternative available now.
Apple iOS 26 is available for all phones from iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max onwards, All iPhones, that is, from 2019 onwards. However, the last-generation software, iOS 18, worked with three extra models, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. Users of those three iPhones have no choice but to turn to the new iOS 18.7.1 update if they want to protect their phones from the security flaw found in FontParser. That’s the part of the iPhone software that processes font files, and it could lead to unexpected app termination, among other things. If you have a more recent iPhone, you can access iOS 26 but some users are not eager to get into the next generation of software before they need to. That day, when iOS 26 is the only option, will come, likely in the next month or two. However, for now, users can stick with iOS 18 — which they might want to do if they don’t care for the new Liquid Glass design, for instance. Whichever you decide you favor, the key is to keep security issues at bay as they arise. This issue is caused by a malicious font that is delivered to the phone, which could lead to memory corruption. The new iOS 26.0.1 update has the same protections, and more. But iOS 18.7.1 has the benefit of being available for more devices, including some iPads.
