Apple has said in the past that it doesn’t give special treatment to particular apps or developers.
Apple offered to lower its fee in order to get Amazon’s Prime Video app on mobile devices and Apple TV—a deal that appears to contradict what CEO Tim Cook told Congress on Wednesday during an antitrust hearing, where he emphasized that Apple doesn’t give special treatment to any particular app or developer.... [+]For apps like Spotify and Hulu, Apple normally takes a 30% cut in the first year from in-app purchases and a 15% cut every year after that.
According to emails released by the House antitrust subcommittee, Apple lowered the fee to 15% for the first year and waived it entirely for customers who already subscribe in order to get Amazon’s Prime Video app on iOS devices and Apple TV. Apple said it would also only take 15% from customers who buy services such as Showtime or Starz through Amazon’s app.2017, though it’s ultimately unclear if those were the final terms of the agreement.
The offer appears to contradict the spirit of what Cook said during a hearing before Congress on anti-competitive behavior Wednesday: “We apply the rules to all developers evenly,” Cook said.“15% rev share for customers that signup using the app ; no rev share for customers that already subscribe,” Apple executive Eddy Cue wrote to Jeff Bezos in Nov. 2016.
