Apple is planning to expand its Apple News app to new countries, marking a significant step for the platform's global reach.
Apple plans to expand its Apple News app to more countries, after initially launching it in English-speaking markets like the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. According to the Financial Times, the company aims to broaden the app's reach, which currently serves around 125 million users monthly. The publication highlights Apple 's focus on building localized news coverage in the UK, including adding puzzles sections currently exclusive to the US and Canada.
This move could directly compete with The New York Times's popular puzzle games. Despite launching a decade ago, the Apple News app has yet to achieve global expansion, a trend observed with several Apple products and services. One potential barrier is the human-curated content model, which may be challenging to scale to non-English markets. Additionally, Apple needs to negotiate with individual publications for inclusion on the platform. However, Apple's ambitious plans to scale the News app and enhance advertising effectiveness suggest a significant role for it in generating revenue for publishers. Apple has been increasingly focusing on its services business, which currently generates $96 billion annually, spanning offerings like Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, and iCloud. Apple News+ is also integrated into the Apple One Premier subscription, but its limited availability in a few countries presents an opportunity for expansion to boost Apple's service revenue
