Apple's navigation app will join Google Maps and Waze this summer as one less place to be safe from being force-fed ads.

Apple Maps will begin showing sponsored search results and some ads later this summer, the company confirmed. In addition to sponsored results, Apple said that businesses will be able to place ads in a new discovery tool called 'Suggested Places.

'The new service will only be available for businesses in the United States and Canada.CORRECTION 3/25/26, 1:11 p.m.: This story has been updated from an earlier version that suggested ads would appear in the Maps navigation app when using Apple CarPlay; however, that's not the case, as they will be limited to Maps on iOS and iPadOS.When corporate profits must ascend to infinity, the economy of ideas changes. As long as an idea results in more revenue, it doesn't matter if it solves a customer's problem. In the tech world, Apple is arguably the king of creating a problem and then offering customers a product to solve it. Now, the company is capitulating to capitalism and worsening its navigation app by adding sponsored results to Apple Maps. Apple recently announced the upcoming change and said that the new service will roll out this summer. Rather than showing banner ads or drossy mobile game ads, Apple said that ads on Maps will show up as sponsored results. In practice, that means that if you're searching for 'restaurants near me,' companies will be able to pay Apple to appear at the top of your search. In addition to the sponsored results, Apple said that they will appear at the top of a new feature called 'Suggested Places,' which will recommend locations based on what is trending and recent searches. The ads are limited to Apple Maps on iOS and iPadOS, however, and won't show up in Apple CarPlay.According to a press release from Apple, the new ads will only be available to businesses in the United States and Canada. The change to the Maps app is part of a larger product from the tech goliath called 'Apple Business,' which will launch on April 14.Apple isn't the first to add sponsored results to its navigation app. Google Maps and Waze have been doing it for years. But considering Apple Maps is the default navigation app on every Apple product, it represents one less place of refuge from surveillance capitalism.➡️ Skip the lot.
