This week’s Apple Loop includes iPhone 14 disappointment, iPhone SE review, the best MacBook for you, the missing miniLED upgrades, a plea for the iPhone Mini, Apple’s billion dollar saving, and more...
Announced at last week's Peek Performance event, Apple's latest iPhone SE updates the venerable form factor first seen in the iPhone6 with the latest hardware, from the A15 chipset through to 5G connectivity. Samuel Axon reviews the newest iOS kid on the block, including the all important battery:
"Apple claims slightly different battery life figures for the 2022 iPhone SE compared to the 2020 model. Namely, the 2022 claims 15 hours of offline video playback to 2020's 13, 10 hours of streaming video playback to 2020's 8, and 50 hours of audio playback to 2020's 40. This is likely due to the increased efficiency of the A15 over the A13."Many watchers expected Apple to launch a new MacBook laptop at last weeks event, and they were disappointed.
"Apple analyst notes that a redesign of the MacBook Air is expected later this year/ Not only will the physical design match that of the new MacBook Pros, but the splash of colour introduced by the iMac will come to Apple’s laptop range. Throw in two more years of software development and a better understanding of the physical needs of the ARM-powered laptop, and you have much better offering than the tired looking MacBook Air on sale in every Apple Store.
"Apple is taking share with just a single product for the rest of this year in this category. While it was previously thought that Apple would also introduce MiniLEDs to the 11” iPad Pro, we no longer believe that is the case, at least not this year. Apple is reportedly targeting its MiniLEDs on larger and more expensive displays. We do expect Apple to introduce MiniLEDs on a 27” monitor, which could be launched in June with its Mac Pro.
"iOS 15.4 adds an option to use Face ID while wearing a mask, which works just like normal Face ID but scans the areas around your eyes for authentication. iPadOS 15.4 introduces Universal Control, allowing multiple Macs and iPads to be controlled with the same mouse/trackpad and keyboard. The updates also add 37 new emoji characters and they lay the groundwork for the new"Tap to Pay on iPhone" feature that allows NFC-compatible iPhones to accept payments through Apple Pay.
