Apple's AI ambitions are faltering as its Intelligence platform faces major delays, leaving it significantly behind rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.
Almost six months after its beta release, Apple Intelligence is still grappling with major delays. Its first significant feature, initially anticipated for early next month with iOS 18.4, has been pushed back to May with iOS 18.5. This delay becomes even more glaring when considering the rapid pace at which Apple's competitors unveil AI advancements almost weekly.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, reveals that Apple Intelligence will likely take at least two more years to achieve capabilities comparable to those of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft's Copilot, which have been available for at least a year. According to Gurman, Apple has a substantial roadmap ahead to revamp Siri and integrate it as a core component of the Apple Intelligence platform. Here's a glimpse of what to expect: iOS 18.4, anticipated for early April, will expand the languages supported by Apple Intelligence. iOS 18.5, expected in May, might enable Siri to leverage user data for more personalized experiences, such as helping you find a podcast episode a friend sent you on iMessage a couple of weeks ago. iOS 19.4, projected for April-May 2026, will introduce a new Siri architecture capable of handling both legacy Siri commands and more advanced queries seamlessly. Furthermore, Gurman's forecast extends to 2027, when Apple might finally deliver the LLM-powered Siri that was initially planned for this June. However, Apple's delayed approach to AI carries significant risks. Despite being the world's most valuable company, Apple has already fallen behind in the AI race. While its devices are currently essential for running these LLM competitors, it's only a matter of time before a truly transformative AI device emerges, potentially rendering iPhones, iPads, and Macs obsolete. Amazon's impressive Alexa+ presentation and breakthroughs by OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft demonstrate the rapid pace of innovation in the field. Furthermore, China is making significant strides in AI, leaving Apple seemingly stagnant despite its vast resources. With Apple's annual major releases, it's also time for the company to adopt a more frequent cadence of announcements, perhaps through more WWDC-like keynotes, to keep pace with competitors
