A general view of Apple European headquarters at Hollyhill industrial estate in Co Cork. The Facility employs 6000 people manufacturing and distributing iMac computers. Apple has terminated hundreds of contractors after it suspended a program in which humans listened to Siri recordings.

Apple sent the workers home on the same day it halted the program. Last week, it reportedly told the contracting firms that it's ending their grading work. As such, those workers were let go with as little as one week's notice.on the grading program and changes it's making. Through an iOS update this fall, users will be able to opt-out of the program.

The company will"no longer retain audio recordings of Siri interactions," instead relying on automated transcripts to refine the voice assistant. However, should users opt in to the grading program, only Apple employees, and not contractors, will check the audio samples. They also aim to delete Siri recordings when it seems users triggered it accidentally.
