President Trump's 10% tariff on Chinese imports puts Apple in a bind, forcing them to choose between absorbing the cost or raising prices. This decision could significantly impact Apple's earnings and profitability.

President Donald Trump 's recent announcement of a 10% tariff on Chinese imports headed for the U.S. has placed Apple in a difficult position. The company, heavily reliant on manufacturing its products in China, will now face the burden of either absorbing the additional cost or passing it on to consumers through increased product prices. During Trump's first term, iPhones and other smartphones from China enjoyed an exemption from tariffs.

However, in 2018, some Apple products manufactured in China were subject to tariffs imposed by Trump, and Apple absorbed the extra cost, maintaining consistent pricing in the U.S. market. This decision, while shielding consumers from price hikes, resulted in lower profit margins for Apple and its shareholders. With the reintroduction of tariffs, Apple finds itself at a crossroads once again. Former Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, now Managing Partner at Deepwater Asset Management, believes this decision will significantly impact Apple's earnings. He predicts a 4% negative impact if the tariff applies to iPhones, potentially affecting Apple Watch models first. Munster anticipates most investors believe Trump will ultimately exempt Apple from the tariff. However, if Apple does decide to share the cost with consumers, the impact would be slightly less severe, estimated at 3.5%. He bases this calculation on the assumption that a 10% tariff on iPhones would necessitate a 5% price increase, leading to a 2% to 3% reduction in demand. Notably, iPhones contribute 43% to Apple's overall profitability. The situation is further complicated by the fact that 85% of iPhone units are manufactured in China, and 62% of Apple's product revenue originates from devices made there, potentially exposing a significant portion of their business to the tariff.
