Apple has reportedly shelved its project to develop augmented reality glasses powered by Mac computers. The glasses, though utilizing the visionOS operating system, were not intended as a direct replacement for the Vision Pro. Internal testing revealed underwhelming performance, and the company's evolving vision for the device's features contributed to the cancellation.

Apple was reportedly developing augmented reality glasses powered by its Mac computers, but it canceled the project before a public announcement. According to sources, Apple scrapped the program this week after executives found the product underwhelming during testing and the company's vision for its features kept evolving. The glasses, while still utilizing visionOS, weren't intended as a direct successor to the Vision Pro.

Initially, Apple aimed to have the AR glasses powered by the iPhone, but the smartphone lacked the processing power to support the device's features and significantly drained its battery. The canceled AR glasses featured built-in displays capable of projecting information, images, and video into the user's field of view. They were lighter than the Vision Pro and didn't display the wearer's eyes like the headset, but they incorporated lenses that could change tint to indicate whether the user was working on a task or free to interact. This concept resembles Meta's recently revealed Orion glasses, which also feature a separate compute unit. While Orion requires a 'wireless compute puck' to function, it doesn't necessitate a connection to a computer or phone. Apple envisioned its glasses as an everyday device. One of the reported challenges is that Vision Pro owners aren't using the headset as frequently as Apple anticipated. Employees within the company's vision products group reportedly believed the project suffered from a lack of focus and clear direction. Nevertheless, Apple remains committed to developing a successor to the Vision Pro and exploring future AR glasses. It's also continuing to refine technologies used in the canceled glasses, such as microLED-type screens, for potential application in upcoming projects
