Alex Familian chats about collaborating with wife, Anna Zlokovic, on her first feature film and shares the role that VFX played in Appendage.

Summary Adapted from an original Bite Size Halloween short, Appendage is currently available to stream on Hulu. The film follows a young fashion designer named, Hannah, who finds herself struggling for vindication in her work and home life. When a ghastly appendage sprouts from her body and wields her insecurities as weapons, Hannah begins to doubt the people she cares about most.

Was this in line with the horror projects you've worked on in the past? Or is Appendage a little bit out of your element? As an editor, we work really well together. We have really similar tastes. I really trust her as a director, and she really trusts me too. We're able to just trust each other on a lot of things, and I really look up to her. That collaboration has been great. She's able to watch a scene and diagnose what the problem is with it in, like, two seconds. I just learned so much from working with her. I feel very grateful that she's also my wife, and we get to do this together.

When we actually shot it, just with the timing of it all, it was hard to make it really look great when it came off. If I remember correctly, we grabbed some images of steak, and pasta, and things like that from the internet, and then comp that onto the bottom of the appendage. So as it came off, you felt this gross texture come off of her, if that makes sense. So just doing all that to amp it up.

Alex Familian: Definitely. The first scene in the movie. The cold open was definitely the most challenging, I would say. Initially, the dialogue between Hannah and her mom was a lot more nuanced. When we cut it together, we realized that the mom wasn't as harsh, or maybe her harshness wasn't reading on screen like it did on paper, despite amazing performances from Deborah Rennard and Hadley Robinson.
