The Indiana Court of Appeals rejected a Crown Point man’s petition for a new trial in his child molesting case.

William Barclay, now 78, was sentenced to 77 years on Jan. 13 after a jury convicted him on seven felony counts of child molesting for two different girls. He appealed his case, saying at one point prosecutors played a video that included him wearing jail garb, which could have prejudiced the jury. Appeals Judge Leanna Weissmann rejected this in a 3-0 decision on Oct. 12. Earlier in the case, prosecutors successfully petitioned to spare one child from testifying.

The video played was just under 40 minutes in a four-day trial, Weissmann wrote. That itself was “harmless.” The evidence against him was “overwhelming,” she wrote. The child’s mother and sister were looking for the girl during a June 26, 2020 gathering at a Crown Point home when they found her in a basement with Barclay. They told the homeowners and called the police once home, records show. The child later told investigators Barclay had molested her, charges state.
