Austin police are asking for the public’s help identifying two suspects connected to multiple elderly fraud cases that investigators say resulted in victims losing more than $70,000.
According to the Austin Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, newly submitted evidence links a female suspect previously identified in a fraud investigation to another theft that occurred Feb. 25 at the Randalls grocery store located at 5311 Balcones Drive.
Investigators said the victim was shopping when the suspect allegedly stole a wallet from the victim’s purse. Police said the suspect, along with a male person of interest, later went to Chase Bank, Wells Fargo, and Best Buy, where they defrauded the victim out of more than $50,000. The updated case comes days after APD released information about a separate elderly fraud investigation tied to incidents on Feb. 23 in Austin and West Lake Hills.
In that case, detectives said the same female suspect used stolen credit cards, bank account information, and a fake identification card containing the victim’s personal information alongside the suspect’s photo to impersonate the victim at multiple banks. Investigators said the suspect successfully withdrew more than $20,000 from several banks, including two Frost Bank locations. Police believe the victim’s wallet had also been stolen from her purse while shopping.
The suspect is described as a white woman in her early 60s to early 70s, weighing around 160 pounds, with medium-length gray hair and glasses. Police said the suspects were seen using a white Mazda SUV. Anyone with information is asked to contact Capital Area Crime Stoppers or call 512-472-8477. Police said a reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
