Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrates the left's 'mass people's movement' while nominating Bernie Sanders at the Democratic convention
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaks by video feed during the virtual 2020 Democratic National ConventionRep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had one minute to deliver a speech nominating Sen. Bernie Sanders for president at the Democratic convention on Tuesday night.
The democratic socialist called for "deep, systemic" solutions that would guarantee healthcare, higher education, living wages, and labor rights for everyone in the US. She described the movement that Sanders helped lead as one that strives to "recognize and repair the wounds of racial injustice" and other forms of bigotry and colonization.
She celebrated Joe Biden's candidacy in tweets shortly after her speech and attempted to clear up confusion online about why she nominated Sanders, rather than Biden. "People on the extreme, whether they're on the left or on the right, they get outsized publicity that tends to define their party," Kasich told BuzzFeed News. "You know, I listen to people all the time make these statements, and because AOC gets outsized publicity doesn't mean she represents the Democratic Party. She's just a part, just some member of it."
