Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., expressed support for California’s redistricting measure in a video ad released Tuesday.on social media platform X, that state residents can stop Republicans from redrawing congressional maps to keep their party in the majority.
“California, you know we don’t back down from a fight. And this November, the fight belongs to you,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said. “Donald Trump is redrawing election maps to force through a Congress that only answers to him, not the people. If he gets away with it, all bets are off, for our healthcare, for our paychecks and our freedoms. With Prop. 50, we can stop him.” Proposition 50, which voters will decide on in November, would replace California’s congressional district maps with new ones created by the state legislature. The new maps would not need to align with a state constitutional amendment which requires an independent and bipartisan commission to form fair districts. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said the proposition would “level the playing field” after some Republican-controlled states created new congressional maps intended to increase the number of GOP members of the House of Representatives. “Prop. 50 levels the playing field and gives power back to the people. Fight for democracy in all 50 states. Yes on 50,” the congresswoman said. President Donald Trump announced last month he would file a lawsuit against the proposition, and some California Republican lawmakers asked the state Supreme Court to prevent its inclusion in the special election ballot this fall. “This Court has long recognized that the Constitution places limits on both the People and the Legislature in matters of redistricting. The proposed measures exceed those limits, representing an unlawful attempt in several respects to exercise authority that the Legislature does not possess,” the lawmakers wrote in their petition, which ultimately failed. “Thus, judicial intervention now—before public resources are wasted on an election that cannot produce a valid law—is both proper and necessary.” Gov. Newsom approved Proposition 50, also known as the Election Rigging Response Act, last month. He said the measure gives residents an opportunity to “bring some much-needed accountability” to the Trump administration. “Californians have been uniquely targeted by the Trump Administration, and thanks to the hard work of the California legislature, they will have a choice to fight back — and bring much needed accountability to Trump’s efforts to undermine the democratic process,” the governor said in a
