Staff had agreed to plan the July 4th event but needed council to approve the funding.

July Fourth could be a little quiet in Antioch this summer unless the City Council can either agree to spend some money or convince the nonprofit that formerly hosted the event to return.

“I’m having a hard time saying yes to this,” Ogorchock said. “Because I know that we are short-staffed everywhere across the city, and I know how much time goes into it.” Motts later said the group did not feel appreciated for its efforts and thought the city wanted to “go in a different direction.” Planning the event usually begins a year in advance and takes an “immense amount of work,” she added.

Brad Helfenberger, parks and recreation director, reminded council members that the city had long taken the lead, sponsoring and hosting the event until the recession hit in 2010, after which a group of residents formed the Celebrate Antioch Foundation and took over planning and raising money for much of the $65,000 to $70,000 cost of the event.
