The 22-year-old rookie shortstop scored twice and provided a spark for the struggling Bombers’ bats inIn the bottom of the sixth inning with the Yankees trailing 2-0, Volpe hit his third home run of the season, a 345-foot shot to right field — rounding the bases in the flashing lights that seemed to signal the Yankees’ offense to come to life.
After Volpe’s ignited a spark, Gleyber Torres doubled and Anthony Rizzo followed with a single to left, sending Torres home to tie the game. “I don’t know about pressure,” Volpe said when asked about his big hit in light of the offense’s recent struggles. “I don’t necessarily know the circumstances really change anything. I try to hold myself to a high standard, and be that leadoff hitter and table setter.”Volpe won the shortstop job during spring training and has since demonstrated his value with a slash line of .230/.336/.370 in 100 at-bats this season.
