Anthony Richard rejoins the Philadelphia Flyers after a brief stint with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Despite being sent down due to roster limitations, Richard continued to excel in the AHL and earned his recall back to the NHL.
Anthony Richard is thrilled to be back with the Philadelphia Flyers after a frustrating demotion to the American Hockey League. Richard, 28, initially made a strong impression in November, scoring two goals and racking up six points in seven NHL games. However, he was sent back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms due to roster limitations.
Despite the setback, Richard remained positive, stating, 'The business side is always frustrating for any player, but I was kind of happy too, when they met with me, it was not about my play. So it gives you a little boost when you go down to keep playing the way I was playing here.'Richard continued to excel with the Phantoms, recording four goals and nine points in seven games before his recall. He returned to the Phantoms' lineup on January 12 after a month-long injury absence and has since added two goals and an assist in four games. Flyers coach John Tortorella echoed Richard's sentiments, expressing his belief that the winger deserved to be in the NHL. 'I can immediately see, when you lose that type of speed up the middle, it affects your groups,' Tortorella said. 'He did some good things. I thought was just inconsistent as far as some turnovers and stuff like that — not upset with him. But when Richie was sent down ... he wasn’t playing poorly at all. He really didn’t deserve to be sent down. ... I’m glad he’s up here. He deserved to be up here. Give another opportunity to bring us some offense.'Richard will now look to recapture his early-season form and contribute offensively to the Flyers. He will play on the left wing alongside center Rodrigo Ābols and Garnet Hathaway against the New York Rangers on Thursday. 'I’m just play the same way when I was here at first,' Richard said. 'Just bring my speed and trying to create offense by being the first on the puck on the forecheck.' Richard and Ābols played together during the preseason and at the beginning of the season in Lehigh Valley. They are familiar with each other's playing styles and are expected to form a strong offensive partnership
