Anthony Edwards has always preferred the road less traveled. Now with a $260 million contract, he is tasked with helping to lead the Timberwolves where they’ve never gone before. ✍️ JonKrawczynski
There is very little history on Edwards’ side in Minnesota. Crutches like tradition and culture are not here to prop him up. In that way, it was fitting the Timberwolves were the team to choose him No. 1 overall in 2020 because Edwards has been choosing the path less traveled his whole life.
As a supremely athletic kid growing up in Atlanta, Edwards could have rode the AAU gravy train on the Nike EYBL circuit. Instead, he aligned with the less-well-known Under Armour program and made a name for himself. In high school, he reclassified and was one of the youngest members of the 2019 class when he could have stayed put and been one of the oldest members of the class of 2020.
This contract represents the next step down that path. In three seasons with the Wolves, Edwards has already cemented himself as one of the most exciting and dynamic young players in the game, a 21-year-old with the hunger and the humanity to instill some hope in a franchise that has too often lost all of it.
Edwards has averaged 21.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and made 35 percent of his 3-pointers, quickly establishing himself as a devastating offensive player who can turn it on defensively when the moment demands it. His stats have steadily improved year over year, from 19.3 points per game as a rookie to 21.3 and then 24.6 last season. His assists climbed from 2.9 to 3.8 to 4.4 per game, and his rebounds have risen from 4.7 to 4.8 to 5.8.
Faith is belief without proof, but the playoffs have shown that Edwards deserves more than mere faith that he can do this. In two playoff appearances, Edwards has been the one to strike fear into his opponents’ hearts. Though he was 20 years old in 2022 against
