Anthony Albanese revealed he attended briefings on the 'bizarre' situation that unfolded in Moscow which led to a failed coup against the Kremlin and warned the unrest was far from over.

Anthony Albanese has confirmed he was briefed three times on the armed uprising in Russia over the weekend and says the failed coup was a direct indication that President Vladimir Putin had"overplayed his hand".

Mr Albanese said despite the short-lived rebellion it was unlikely the situation in Russia had been resolved. "What is very clear to me is that the Russian illegal invasion of Ukraine has been a disaster for the people of Ukraine, most importantly, but it has also been a disaster for the people of Russia."

Wagner fighters had recently captured Rostov-on-Don and had set off toward Moscow before Prigozhin agreed to de-escalate theMr Albanese described the attempted coup as a"disaster" for President Putin and said it was"bizarre" to watch it unfold from a distance.
