Sophomore Gonzalez strikes for career-high 31 points as Pirates improve to 13-3
After Alex Ante handed the ball off to Seton Hall Prep teammate Anthony Gonzalez at the top of the key, the junior forward shuffled down to the low left block for what he presumed would be an awesome view of a game-winning shot by Gonzalez at the end of his dribble drive.
“This division, I think, probably is the best in the state,” Ante said. “There’s a lot of good teams, and coming in these gyms and getting wins is hard. But we gutted it out.”Seton Hall may have to gut out another one against Arts if the seeds for the upcoming Essex County Tournament hold to form. The top-seeded Pirates and second-seeded Arts could meet in the Feb. 22 championship at Essex County College.
Colwell then blocked a second Prep shot with 48 seconds left, and followed three successive Arts misses at the other end with a putback that gave his team the lead at 54-53 with 21 seconds to go. Arts has now lost five of their last nine games, but should never be dismissed as a contender in the ECT or down the road in the North 2, Group 1 tournament.
If Gonzalez wished he’d made the game-winning bucket, he sure wasn’t letting on. He managed to get the job done by merely creating a shot, and that fit well into his self-appointed job description. “I kept telling them how this was going to be a test of our maturity. As a mature team, you have to use those rest days wisely and then come out swinging,” Gibbs said.
