The list of traffic alerts for commuters on Washington State Ferries (WSF) shows limited service on multiple routes for two reasons: vessel and crew shortages.
"They need both," WSF worker David Gericke as he waited for the 5:30 a.m. boat to Bainbridge Island on Tuesday. "Boats preferred."
The M/V Kittitas is one of two boats on the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route and was taken out of service for crews to repair the radar system. To fill the void, the M/V Issaquah ferry was pulled from the Bainbridge Island route, leaving the M/V Tacoma to cover the run. The Issaquah carries 202 cars while Tacoma carries 124.The Edmonds-Kingston route is also down to one boat service because of a vessel shortage.
