The Safeway grocery store in Pinole's Appian 80 shopping center will close its doors on April 4, leaving residents seeking alternative options for their grocery needs. While the city expressed disappointment over the closure, they remain hopeful that another grocery store will fill the void. Safeway cited the end of its lease as the reason for closure and emphasized the transfer of all employees to nearby locations. The news follows the recent and controversial closure of the Safeway in San Francisco's Fillmore District, where safety concerns and shoplifting incidents led to the decision.

Another Safeway store in the Bay Area is closing its doors. The city of Pinole announced last week that the grocery chain would be shutting down its location at the Appian 80 shopping center. City officials expressed disappointment over the news but remain hopeful that another grocery store will take over the space to serve Pinole residents.

\The city stated in a news release, 'While the City is saddened by the store’s planned closure, we remain cautiously optimistic about future opportunities for the site.' The release added, 'The property owner has indicated that the site is not on the market and that they continue to actively plan for a grocery store at this location.' Safeway confirmed that all employees at the store will be transferred to nearby locations. The company stated that its lease was ending but did not provide specific reasons for choosing not to renew the lease agreement. \'We have been proud to serve the City of Pinole over the years, and this decision was not made lightly. With our lease term ending, we have carefully considered our options and decided to shift our strategy,' a Safeway spokesperson told KTVU in an emailed statement. Pinole city officials explained that the city had collaborated with the previous property owners to develop a new Safeway that included a gas station and additional retailers. However, when the new owners took over in 2023, they decided against pursuing those plans. 'The City remains committed to supporting a strong and vibrant commercial corridor at Appian 80,' Pinole officials stated, adding, 'The City looks forward to working with the property owner on exploring and supporting new opportunities that will strengthen the economic business corridor and provide needed services for our community.' \The store is scheduled to close on April 4, according to the city. Safeway informed Pinole customers that they can visit its nearby Hercules store. That location, which features a gas station and pharmacy, is approximately 2.5 miles away. The news of Pinole's closure follows the controversial closure of the Safeway in San Francisco's Fillmore District. The chain cited persistent shoplifting issues and concerns for employee and customer safety as reasons for the decision. Residents in the area protested the closure, arguing that it would negatively impact the community by eliminating a convenient source for groceries and prescription drugs. The 3.68-acre full-service store closed permanently on January 17 after operating at the location for 40 years. 'Due to the rapid sell through of remaining inventory, the Webster Street Safeway closed permanently earlier than expected,' Safeway told KTVU. The pharmacy at the Safeway closed last week on Thursday
