Finger: Texas embraces a new hope in a familiar ending

Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian before the start of Friday’s Alamo Bowl game against Washington at the Alamo Dome.As a 10-year-old, Quinn Ewers attended an Alamo Bowl in which Texas deemed all of this unacceptable. Finishing a season in San Antonio, before New Year’s Day. Losing five games. Getting out-schemed and outmuscled on friendly turf by a visitor from the Pacific Northwest.

At long last, the Longhorns seem less concerned with being “back” than with being realistic. They didn’t play for a conference championship or contend for a playoff berth this year. They didn’t play particularly well Thursday night against the 12th-ranked Huskies, who never trailed and built a 17-point fourth quarter lead before Texas managed to make the score more respectable in the closing minutes.

Granted, part of the reason things improved in his second season is that the Longhorns had taken such a significant step back in his first, when they went 5-7 in 2021. And granted, nights like Thursday — when the Longhorns managed just three first-half points as Sarkisian’s early game plan fell flat — haven’t done much to cement his reputation as a supposed offensive savant.

All in all, it was, as Sarkisian described the game, “kind of a microcosm of how our season went.” If someone were so inclined, he could look at Ewers’ performance and see plenty of evidence that he can be a difference-maker for a championship contender. And if someone else were inclined another way, he could look at the same performance and see reasons to believe Ewers might lose his job to Manning or backup Maalik Murphy.
