CAGAYAN de Oro City, Philippines: What came about in a tournament in Misamis Oriental last July took a similar sequence on Saturday, November 4, as International Master Joel Pimentel of Bacolod City and local boy Johnnel Balquin posted a 1-2 finish in the finale of the nationwide Rising Chess Unlimited here at the Limketkai Center.

In a little twist of the narrative, however, Balquin, who yielded to Pimentel in taking the second place honor during the Asenso Misamis Occidental National Open Chess Tournament last July, had managed to secure a draw with the eventual champion in their King's Indian defense duel in the penultimate round last Saturday.'Actually, he had the advantage in the middle game but missed the winning line with black.

Completing the top 16 finishers out of the 160 participants are Auza, Nazario Ubanan, David Rey Ancheta, Jeff Russell Rivera and Roland Sajetarios with 21 points each; FM Asuela with 20 points, and Abdul Halil Abdullah, FM Victor Bruce Lluch , Cosain Magarang, Janalan Marohomsalic, Mario Arroyo, Faisal Amanggay and FM Villanueva with 19 points apiece.
