Visitors can explore over 100 artifacts, many unseen in the US before, and experience a meticulously recreated full-scale replica of the annex. The exhibition will delve into the historical context of the Franks' experience, the rise of antisemitism, and the devastating consequences of the Holocaust.
The ' Anne Frank The Exhibition ' is coming to New York City on January 27th, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, offering visitors a poignant glimpse into the hidden annex where Anne Frank and her family sought refuge from the Nazis during World War II. The exhibit is a meticulously recreated full-scale replica of the annex, complete with the original furniture that once filled the space during Anne's years in hiding.
More than 100 artifacts, many unseen in the United States before, will be on display, shedding light on the Franks' desperate attempt to survive. Among these treasures are personal belongings, letters, and photographs that paint a vivid picture of life in confinement. Notably absent from the exhibition will be Anne's diary, a testament to her courage and hope that captured the world's imagination after the war.In July 1942, 13-year-old Anne Frank, her parents Otto and Edith, and her 16-year-old sister Margot, went into hiding in the annex. The van Pels family — Hermann, Auguste, and their 15-year-old son Peter — joined them a week later. Four months after that, Fritz Pfeffer sought refuge in the same space, hoping to escape the clutches of the Nazi German occupiers who had seized control of the Netherlands. They remained hidden until their discovery in 1944, leading to their harrowing journey to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. Anne and Margot were later transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they both succumbed to typhus in February 1945. Anne was just 15 years old. Otto, Anne's father and the only survivor from the annex, published her diary after the war. It quickly became a global sensation, serving as a powerful symbol of hope and resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity. 'As a custodian of Anne’s legacy, we have an obligation to help world audiences understand the historical roots and evolution of antisemitism, including how it fueled Nazi ideology that led to the Holocaust. Anne’s legacy is remarkable, as represented in the diary she left us, and as one of the 1.5 million Jewish children who were murdered at the hands of Nazi officials and their collaborators. Through this exhibition, the Anne Frank House offers insights into how this could have happened and what it means for us today,' said Ronald Leopold, Executive Director of the Anne Frank House. Alongside the faithfully reconstructed annex, the exhibition will trace the Franks' history, from their life in Germany, their move to the Netherlands, and the fateful decision to go into hiding, to their harrowing discovery, deportation, Anne's tragic death, and Otto's postwar decision to share her diary with the world. The exhibit will be on display at the Center for Jewish History, located at 15 W 16th Street in New York City, from January 27th—International Holocaust Remembrance Day—through April 30th, 2025.
