Ami Rizek, owner of Doki Doki anime shop in Lakewood, Ohio, implemented a policy preventing minors from entering the store alone after a recent theft by a group of teenagers. Rizek confronted the teens, listened to their explanation, and emphasized the impact of their actions. She hopes they learned a valuable lesson about responsibility and the importance of community.
LAKEWOOD , Ohio - The phrase it takes a village has a whole new meaning for small business owner Ami Rizek.
She owns Doki Doki in Lakewood, a shop whose aisles are filled with anime figures, Japanese treats, and Kawaii charms.“We put up cameras, we have a live feed, it’s something I don’t want to do,” said Rizek.A crime that hits close to home. “Because it was a group of teens and those are the people we’re trying to look out for,” said Rizek. “Who we want to come to the store as a safe space’ “No longer allowing anyone under 18 to be in the store without an adult.“They saw that post I made on social media and they came back,” said Rizek. “I couldn’t believe it honestly.”
Rizek says she sat the 3 kids down and talked to them about what they had done, and how stealing impacts her livelihood and their access to a place for them and others to hang out. “I listened to them, they heard me, and they wanted the outcome to be different because they didn’t want the store to be a place where kids couldn’t come to anymore,” said Rizek.“I hope they learned from this, and understand this is what being a good person is like and what the outcome can be,” said Rizek. ”And if I make a mistake it’s not the end and it doesn’t have to define me.
