Animator Buck Woodall alleges Disney infringed on his copyright by using elements from his 2003 screenplay 'Bucky' in the creation of 'Moana' and its sequel. Woodall claims similarities in plot, themes, and character designs, particularly those related to Polynesian culture.

Animator Buck Woodall has filed a lawsuit against Disney , alleging that the entertainment giant copied elements from his screenplay, 'Bucky,' for the creation of ' Moana ' and its sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, which obtained the lawsuit, Woodall asserts that Disney utilized plot elements, thematic concepts, and visual designs from his work. This is not Woodall's first legal encounter with Disney . A similar case was dismissed in November due to the statute of limitations.

However, the release of 'Moana 2' has enabled him to revive his accusations, presenting new grounds for copyright infringement. In a lawsuit filed in California federal court on Friday, Woodall claims that Disney employed materials he shared in 2003 with Mandeville Films, a production company that had a first-look deal with Disney at the time. He states that he provided Mandeville with a screenplay, storyboards, and character designs for 'Bucky,' a narrative set in an ancient Polynesian village. Woodall contends that the films share significant commonalities, including themes of Polynesian spirituality, a protagonist embarking on a perilous journey, and encounters with demigods adorned with hooks and tattoos. He further highlights similarities in 'Moana 2,' such as the protagonist searching for a mythical island and undertaking a mission to break an ancient curse.Disney has not issued a statement regarding the lawsuit, and it remains uncertain whether any Disney personnel directly examined Woodall's materials prior to developing 'Moana.' While Woodall maintains that the resemblances are too pronounced to be coincidental, Disney has previously asserted that 'Moana' was independently conceived. The lawsuit sheds light on ongoing debates in Hollywood concerning intellectual property and creative rights. As Disney faces renewed scrutiny, this case could have substantial implications for how studios manage submissions and develop films inspired by diverse cultures. This is not the first legal challenge Woodall has directed against Disney. In November, a court ruled that while a jury might find the works similar, his initial lawsuit was filed past the permissible time limit. The release of 'Moana 2' presented Woodall with a new opportunity to pursue claims, citing additional copyright infringement
