From a piece featuring silhouette-like figures that evoke the kind of puppetry that became the first “motion-pictures,” to pieces that speak to the various ways cartoonists offer insight in as little as a single panel, the “Out of Character” exhibition at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City has a lot to offer about the way all these works are fine art.
Literally, a lot. “Out of Character” runs the gamut. Sculpture in one corner, work from S. Clay Wilson, Nicole Claveloux, and Jaime Hernandez along walls full of artists that all deserve the same prominent space. In a way, “Out of Character” inherently speaks to how much even more work in the cartoon field is out there that doesn’t make a gallery’s walls.
