Cathy Rosenthal says pet owners can take precautions to protect their feathered friends...
Anadolu Agency/Getty ImagesWe want to paint the inside of our home, but we have a cockatiel and are still trying to figure out what to do with her while we paint. We know that paint fumes can be dangerous for birds. What can we do to ensure her safety? You're wise to be careful. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are harmful chemicals found in paint that can be fatal to birds when inhaled.
The good news is low-VOC paints are available at just about any store that sells paint. It's important to point out that low VOCs do not mean “no VOCs”; there are still trace amounts of VOCs in the paint. But low-VOC paints are definitely much safer to use. Still, you have to take precautions. If you're painting a room, keep your bird in another part of the house and ventilate the space that's being painted. If you’re painting the entire house, in addition to using low-VOC paints, ask a friend or local kennel to take care of your bird while the work is going on. Air the house for a few days, especially the room where the bird lives, before returning your bird to the home.
Because birds are extremely sensitive to chemicals in the air, I also caution bird owners not to use Teflon or other nonstick cookware or bakeware in the home. When heated at high temperatures, these products can emit microscopic airborne particles that can be fatal when inhaled by a bird.Bruno Vigneron/Getty ImagesMy cat likes to use our hallway entry table as a scratching post. The entry table cost $200, so I am not thrilled about this.
