During the solar eclipse, animals at the San Antonio Zoo exhibited unusual behavior, mistaking the darkness for evening. Meerkats ran erratically and headed indoors, while flamingos gathered together for safety. Meanwhile, whooping cranes continued with their usual activities, with two birds seen engaging in a mating ritual.
As near-totality hit during Monday's solar eclipse , animals at the San Antonio Zoo were ready to hit the hay. Video that the zoo shared shows various species fooled into thinking the darkness meant it was already evening.
'This clustering gives them a sense of safety in numbers, acting as a defense mechanism against predators,' the zoo said in a news release. Meanwhile, the whooping cranes were getting on with business as usual. Two of the birds were seen in the videos dancing together, a typical mating ritual. Social media users went wild over the footage, asking the zoo for more information on how how other animals behaved while most people were looking skyward.
