The Elkhorn Valley Pride beef was shipped to multiple locations in nine states, including Pennsylvania.

The boxes have the establishment number “EST. M-19549″ inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The FSIS said the meat was shipped to distributors, federal establishments, retail and wholesale locations, including hotels, restaurants, and institutions, in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. FSIS said the problem was found when it was conducting routine testing of the ground beef derived from the product and a sample tested positive for “Shiga toxin-producingPeople can become sick, the FSIS said, from two to eight days after consuming the organism.

Symptoms of infection include diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection. Although kidney failure is rare with the infection, it can happen in children under the age of 5, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
