A stampede by fans at a quarterfinals soccer match in the Salvadoran league has left 12 people dead and injured dozens more, officials say.

“I fell and my body from my waist to my feet was crushed. Five people pulled me free and saved me by a miracle. Two people in front of me died. I spoke to one and he didn't move," the boy said. “El Salvador is in mourning,” said a statement from the press office of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, which confirmed that at least 12 people were dead.
“It was a night of terror. I never thought something like this would happen to me,” sAlianza fan Tomas Renderos said as he left a hospital where he had received medical attention. “Fortunately I only have a few bruises ... but not everyone had my luck.”
