Angie Best has announced she is officially cancer free following major surgery to remove a tumor from her colon. The 74-year-old former model had disclosed in January that she was battling Stage 3 colon cancer with liver metastasis.
Her treatment journey included an unconventional approach: she traveled to Switzerland for mistletoe therapy, an alternative treatment using extracts from the European mistletoe plant, which she combined with traditional chemotherapy. This integrative approach successfully shrank her 30-centimeter tumor, and last month her son Calum reported that her liver was clear of cancer. The final step was surgical removal of the remaining colon tumor.
In a lengthy Instagram video posted on Saturday, Angie, the ex-wife of the late footballer George Best, shared her excitement and gratitude after the operation's success. She described undergoing laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to excise the last of the cancer, explaining that prior chemo and immunotherapy had reduced the large mass to a small piece attached to the colon.
She detailed her postoperative recovery, including a fluid-only diet for three days and the careful reintroduction of food, noting her colon functioned perfectly.
"I'm so happy because now I can officially say with gratitude and love that I am cancer free and healing," she said, adding she plans to reinvent herself at age 74. Throughout her battle, Angie kept followers updated, sharing her hair loss and symptoms, having split her time between the UK and the Swiss clinic.
Mistletoe therapy, used for decades in parts of Europe, is considered an alternative treatment; while some believe it stimulates the immune system, mainstream medicine cites inconclusive evidence for its effectiveness as a cure, and it is not an NHS-approved standard treatment. It can be used alongside chemotherapy, as Angie did.
