However, the sun was directly in second baseman Oswald Peraza’s eyes. So Grissom, in a very unconventional move, fired the ball into the dirt halfway between him and second base so Peraza could catch the ball on the bounce and avoid the sun. Peraza fielded Grissom’s bounce pass easily, turned and fired a strike to first baseman Nolan Schanuel to complete the slick double play.

The Angels jumped on the Cardinals early, as five of their 10 hits came in the first inning. Designated hitter Jorge Soler got the scoring started with a two-run double, Grissom drove in Soler with a line drive to right field, and right fielder Jo Adell punctuated the five-run first inning with a two-run home run.
