The Angels’ two-way star was a finalist for the Players’ Choice MLB Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Player, but in both cases MLB players picked Judge. Ohtani won both of those awards last year, along with the American League MVP award, which is selected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America .
This year, Ohtani and Judge are the two top candidates for the MVP. The top three finishers will be revealed, alphabetically, on Monday. The winner will be announced on Nov. 17.Ohtani completed his second straight historic season as baseball’s most successful two-way player since Babe Ruth. Ohtani hit .273 with 34 homers and an .875 OPS, while posting a 15-9 record and 2.33 ERA in 166 innings on the mound.
Players also voted for Houston Astros right-hander Justin Verlander over Angels outfielder Mike Trout for the AL Comeback Player of the Year. Verlander also won the AL’s Outstanding Pitcher Award.
