José Suarez allows four runs in less than five innings of a 4-0 loss called because of rain in the sixth
CHICAGO — The Angels’ six-game winning streak came to a soggy end Saturday afternoon.Left-hander José Suarez was charged with all four runs in four-plus innings of work, another disappointing start in what has been a rough beginning to his season.
After four starts, Suarez has a 6.35 ERA. He hasn’t yet to finish the fifth inning. He has not looked like the pitcher who won a 2022 rotation spot by posting a 3.75 ERA in 2021. On Saturday, he allowed a homer to Tim Anderson on his first pitch of the game. After that, he settled into a groove for a couple innings. He then escaped a tough jam in the fourth, allowing a pair of singles to start the inning and then retiring three in a row.Suarez gave up a double to Josh Harrison, a single to Tim Anderson and a three-run homer to Luis Robert. After Suarez surrendered another hit and a walk, his day was over.
Soon after that, Suarez allowed a 1-0 deficit to turn into a 4-0 deficit. And soon after that, a downpour drenched the ballpark. Mike Trout had worked Velasquez through an eight-pitch at-bat when umpires signaled for the grounds crew to cover the field. The good news for the Angels was that they were able to give all their top relievers the day off. Because they played enough to make it an official game, they don’t have to worry about a doubleheader Sunday.
