Patrick Sandoval rebounds nicely, but the struggling offense collects only four hits and the bullpen allows five two-out runs in the ninth inning of a 7-2 defeat.
ANAHEIM ― In a game of inches, the couple inches separating the top and bottom of Phil Gosselin’s kneecaps were still bothering Phil Nevin when he spoke to reporters after the Angels’ 7-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday night.
Torres’ error in judgment, however egregious it was, could not account for the five hits the Angels allowed in the ninth inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 7-1 chasm. Nor could it explain the fielding error Jo Adell committed in left field, when a ball rattled around the corner and eluded his glove twice, giving Marcus Semien a free trip around the bases. Or the ground ball that ate up Angels second baseman Luis Rengifo, the potential third out of an inning, which led to another Texas run.
Adell misplayed a couple of angles off the wall after Semien hit a double down the left-field line in the sixth inning. The second time the ball trickled under his glove, Semien rounded third base, forcing the Angels to make a perfect relay from Adell to Rengifo to catcher Kurt Suzuki. Rengifo’s throw bounced short of home plate, and Semien was safe on the double and two-base error.
The error was Adell’s fourth of this season – his third in left field, in his 18th start at the position.
