Raisel Iglesias gave up a grand slam in the eighth and Jimmy Herget gave up a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
PHILADELPHIA — Each time it seems the Angels may have hit rock bottom, they dig a little deeper.
The Angels have had a lead in the eighth inning or later in five of the 11 losses, but none of the blown leads were quite as crushing as this one. In the bottom of the inning, Iglesias gave up two singles and Maddon then pulled him in favor of Jimmy Herget, with one out to go. Herget’s 3-and-2 curve ball to No. 9 hitter Bryson Stott ended up in the right field seats for a three-run homer.
Duffy said they’ve already had two meetings, one led by coaches and one led by players, to try to shake this slump. The losses have mostly fallen into two categories: games in which their starters were so bad that they fell behind big early, and games that they hung around for the bullpen to lose them late.
Loup allowed a bloop single to Odubel Herrera. Johan Camargo then hit a routine bouncer to Duffy, whose throw to second sailed into right field.
