Manager Phil Nevin and General Manager Perry Minasian both say Ohtani gave them no reason to suspect any type of injury before the two-way star pitched on Wednesday.
NEW YORK — As many second-guess the Angels for their handling of Shohei Ohtani leading up to the stunning diagnosis about his elbow, Manager Phil Nevin conceded that even the thoughts have crossed his mind.
“I think everyone in that room is wondering, hey, could we have done anything differently,” the Nevin said Friday. “You sit here and rack your brain about it and beat yourself up over it, and no, there’s not anything. These injuries happen. It stinks.”since the announcement that Ohtani has a torn ulnar collateral ligament , which ends his season as a pitcher, both Nevin and General Manager Perry Minasian reiterated that there were no signs of an injury before Wednesday. “Talking to Shohei, talking to , talking to the trainers, there was no pain,” Nevin said. “People want to speculate all they want. That’s not the case. That’s not true. He just felt what he called fatigue, a little tired. When he got through the week after missing the start, he felt great all week. He threw a great bullpen. And it just went amiss there in the second inning.” Minasian said the Angels did not do an MRI exam or any other imaging of Ohtani’s arm during the time leading up to Wednesday’s start. Ohtani asked to skip his start during the series against the Texas Rangers earlier this month, so he had two full weeks off leading up to his start on Wednesday.“As we sit here today, he’s going to play until he tells us he’s not,” Minasian said. Minasian said Ohtani and his agent are still working on plans to get a second opinion to determine the next step for his arm,. Minasian would not elaborate on the severity of the tear that Ohtani suffered. “That’ll be taken care of when he decides what he wants to do as far as the grade of the tear,” Minasian said. “That’ll be for a different day.”Mike Trout said he will “for sure,” be back this season, even though his first attempt to return from his fractured hamate bone ended up being premature.“I wasn’t right,” Trout said on Friday. “I was in some pain, more than tolerable. I thought I could push it, get back out there. I just came in the next day really, really sore. … You saw the swings. They weren’t my A swings. I was just trying to get through it. Probably shouldn’t have. Gave it a shot. It is what it is.” Trout said he could not have aggravated the initial injury, but he was concerned that by compensating for that injury he might have been putting something else at risk.The Angels recalled outfielder Trey Cabbage to replace Trout on the roster.Catcher Matt Thaiss was placed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Thaiss said he was hurt when he slid head-first into third base during the doubleheader on Saturday. He tried to play on Wednesday but was in pain when he was hitting and throwing.The Angels activated catcher Chad Wallach, who had been with the team since Tuesday as part of the taxi squad. In order to add Wallach back to the 40-man roster, the Angels designated right-hander Chris Devenski for assignment.
