The Angels’ longest winning streak of the season ended at five, after pitcher Nathan Eovaldi throws eight scoreless innings for the Rangers.

Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani gestures in the dugout before the team’s baseball game against the Texas Rangers Saturday, May 6, 2023, in Anaheim, Calif. The announced crowd of 37,409 at Angel Stadium almost saw it again Saturday. Unfortunately for the Angels, it was Texas Rangers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi who brushed with history, twirling eight shutout innings in a 10-1 defeat. The Angels’ longest winning streak of the season ended at five.

The way Eovaldi was pitching, even a three-run deficit felt too large to overcome. The right-hander was one week removed from his last start, a 2-0 win over the Yankees that marked the season’s first complete game shutout. Angels starter Reid Detmers ran into a familiar problem. He was excellent for three innings, striking out six of the 12 batters he faced without issuing a walk. He threw one pitch a career-high 97.7 mph, according to Statcast. Then came a big inning he was fortunate to finish.

Ryan Tepera, who was warming up before Detmers struck out Robbie Grossman to end the inning, finally took over after Detmers walked Nathaniel Lowe to begin the fifth.
