Amid ongoing family estrangement, Angelina Jolie was spotted in Rwanda supporting a women's farming cooperative, while her children Maddox and Zahara formally petitioned to drop Brad Pitt's surname, highlighting the widening rift within the former 'Brangelina' family.
Angelina Jolie appeared composed and charitable this week amid renewed estrangement between her children and their father Brad Pitt. The former couple, often referred to as ' Brangelina,' share six children: Shiloh, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18, whom they conceived together, and adopted Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, and Zahara, 21.
In recent years, several of the children have distanced themselves from Pitt by dropping his surname. This summer, Maddox and Zahara took out legal advertisements in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, each running four times, to formally petition to change their last names from Jolie-Pitt to Jolie. This public move deepened the rift.
Meanwhile, Jolie, 51, known for her humanitarian work, was photographed in Rwanda near Kigali. She shared an enthusiastic Instagram post about visiting the Imboni cooperative farm, which she praised as collectively run by women, many of whom are survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The post featured a joyful photo of Jolie dancing with the women, arms raised, alongside her close friend Giles Duley, a renowned British documentary photographer.
Duley's Legacy of War Foundation supports the Imboni collective by helping purchase arable land for conflict survivors to become profitable, climate-smart farmers. The Daily Mail reached out to representatives for both Jolie and Pitt for comment. Jolie's connection to Africa has been longstanding but not without controversy. She and Pitt traveled to Namibia for the birth of Shiloh in 2006, where they secured a government-enforced no-fly zone over their accommodation.
The Namibian embassy in the US reportedly stated that visas for journalists to cover the couple would only be issued with the parties' consent. A local human rights group alleged that the couple's security and Namibian police conducted door-to-door searches for paparazzi, drawing international criticism. These incidents placed 'Brangelina' under intense scrutiny. The family's disintegration has been public and bitter.
Shiloh legally changed her surname last year, and Zahara and Vivienne also informally adopted Jolie as their last name before Zahara formalized hers. Maddox submitted legal paperwork in May to officially drop Pitt's surname for 'personal' reasons, having already used Jolie alone in recent credits. In Jolie's 2024 film 'Maria,' he was listed as Maddox Jolie, whereas two years earlier in 'Maria Callas biopic Maria' he was credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt.
The divorce, following their split in 2016 after marrying in 2014, sparked a fierce custody and property dispute. Jolie accused Pitt of abuse, which he denied. Their relationship began during the filming of 'Mr & Mrs Smith' in 2005 while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston, a scandal that divided global fans into 'Team Jolie' or 'Team Aniston.
