If it comes to a showdown, Rayner has a vote on the NEC but it is far from clear that she will opt for open mutiny. Rayner’s sympathy provides cover for the party leadership whatever Abbott’s future as an MP turns out to be. When she says she speaks as “Deputy Leader” she is making it clear that she, like Starmer, has not been part of the disciplinary or selection process.
To his critics on the left Prescott was a double agent. An outspoken ambassador to old Labour while always bolstering “Tony” in the end. His subtle loyalty, and reformist New Labour credentials, earned him some licence. He famously likened Blair’s chief adviser Peter Mandelson to a crab, and survived an affair while in office and punching a protester on the campaign trail. Grasping the comparison gleefully, Rayner reassures that she has no “plans to punch anyone”.
